Scunthorpe is a town in North Lincolnshire, England. It is the administrative centre of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority, and had an estimated total resident population of 72,514 in 2010. A predominantly industrial town, Scunthorpe, the United Kingdom’s largest steel processing centre is also known as the “Industrial Garden Town”.
It is also the third largest settlement in Lincolnshire after Lincoln and Grimsby. As of 2012, Steel industry is the major employer in the area and largest operator within is Tata Steel. The Normanby Park and Red burn complex closed in the early 1980’s the number of employed in the industry fell from 27,000 to around 4500. The remaining jobs in Scunthorpe are still one of the three major integrated steel works in Britain. The facilities include four blast furnaces, continuous casting and rod works in Britain.
